Many/much

Many for countable, much for uncountable in (?) and (-)

We use many before plural (countable) nouns and much before uncountable nouns. We use them in negative sentences and questions. We don’t often use them in affirmative sentences.

There isn’t much coffee in the jar.
Were there many people in the party

Too much/too many DEMASIADO, so much/so many TANTOS

Note that we don’t normally use much/many in affirmative sentences, but we can use too much and too many or so much and so many in affirmative sentences.

There’s too much salt in the soup.
You eat too many biscuits.
There were so many people that we had to leave.
He ate so much cake that it made him sick.

· A lot of/Lots of

· Significado: Mucho

Uso: Expresan idea de gran cantidad. Se puede usar con nombres o sustantivos contables e incontables. A diferencia de “many” y “much”, no las usamos en frases interrogativas. En general, “lots of” es más informal.

· Ejemplos:

He does not have a lot of books.(No tiene muchos libros.)CONTABLES

Many, much y a lot of suelen llevar a confusión a los hispanohablantes. El uso normalmente depende de si el sustantivo es contable o incontable.

Much, many, como también, a lot of (o lots of) significan lo mismo “mucho, mucha, muchos, muchas”. A pesar de tener el mismo significado, debemos tener en cuenta los siguientes aspectos:

Much es para sustantivos incontables, many para contables y a lot of (lots of) para ambos. Podemos decir que es un comodín.

Much y many normalmente se usan para frases negativas e interrogativas, mientras que a lot of para afirmativas.

· Little/A little

Significado: Poco/s
A little

A little es usado con frases positivas/afirmativas e incontables. Para que te hagas una idea, suele significar también «a small amount» o «some».

Ejemplos:

There is a little milk in the refrigerator.
Would you like a little water?
Zoe got a little bif of pie.
Can’t you discount it a little?

Little

Little expresa un tamaño pequeño o una cantidad en negativo. También significa «almost nothing» o «not much».

Ejemplos:

I’m sorry, I speak little Italian.
There was little time to finish my homework.
The kitten is little.
I have drunk little water this morning.

Few/A few

· Significado: Poco/s

A few

A few representa una cantidad afirmativa/positiva. También significa «a small amount», pero se utiliza con la siguiente estructura; A few + Nombre plural contable (A few + Plural Countable Nouns)

Ejemplos:

He has a few good friends so he is happy.
There are a few books on the shelf.
We stayed a few days in Paris and visited the Eiffel Tower.

Few

Few representa una cantidad negativa o escasez/falta de ello. Es usado con nombres plurales contables. Otros significados usables pueden ser «not many» o «not enough».

Utiliza la siguiente estructura: Few + nombre plural contable.

Ejemplos:

I have got few friends in the city so I am lonely.
They have got few cake on the table.
He has few photos on Instagram.

Uso: Expresan un número pequeño. Se usan sólo con nombres contables. Como hemos visto arriba, la opción de usar “few” o “a few” refleja la opinión sobre la cantidad expresada. “Few” describe la cantidad de forma negativa y “a few" la describe de forma positiva.
